Elizabeth Blackwell (1707-1758) was a Scottish botanical illustrator, engraver and author. Blackwell's work, “A Curious Herbal containing five hundred cuts of the most useful plants, which are now used in the practice of physick, to which is added a short description of ye plants and their common uses in physick” (1739) was the the first known herbal produced by a woman. It was a success upon publication and was praised by physicians and apothecaries of the mid-late 18th century.
